The make-a-ten method is a fast way to calculate addition within 20. By splitting one addend into two numbers, making one number plus the other addend equal to 10, then adding the remaining number, the calculation process is simplified. This method helps children improve calculation speed and accuracy, and is an important foundational skill in elementary math learning.
One and nine are good friends: 1 and 9 make 10
Two and eight hold hands: 2 and 8 make 10
Three and seven are close: 3 and 7 make 10
Four and six go together: 4 and 6 make 10
Five and five make a pair: 5 and 5 make 10
Example 1: 7 + 5 = ? Approach: 7 needs 3 to make 10, so split 5 into 3 and 2, first calculate 7+3=10, then 10+2=12
Example 2: 8 + 6 = ? Approach: 8 needs 2 to make 10, so split 6 into 2 and 4, first calculate 8+2=10, then 10+4=14
Example 3: 9 + 4 = ? Approach: 9 needs 1 to make 10, so split 4 into 1 and 3, first calculate 9+1=10, then 10+3=13
